As some of you will already know, I have been studying with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition for the last 10 months, and have been loving every second of it.
I have gathered a wealth of knowledge about dietary theory, nutrition and eating, but also come away with an in-depth understanding that food isn’t the only thing that nourishes us. There are so many parts of our lives that can fuel us, and they aren’t all found on our plates! Career and love, spirituality and physical activity – all of these affect us on a physical, mental and emotional level. Just like food. And often, things happening in our lives – good and bad – affect our nutrition choices. Eating tubs of ice-cream after a breakup is only human, right?! And equally, our food choices can affect what happens in our lives. We’ve all had that sugar-crash nap too I’m sure.
What if we could make better decisions that not only looked after our body, but after our mind and general wellbeing too? Decisions that could have an impact on how we feel now – and in the future?
I think we all know that diets don’t work long-term, and that restricting food doesn’t make us feel good mentally. And we definitely all know that junk food is worse. I used to follow countless diets, so sure that my life would be perfect if I just looked a certain way. I never realised I was in a perpetual cycle of anxiety and unhappiness, too consumed with how I looked on the outside to notice what was going on within.
When I discovered intuitive eating and yoga, a thousand light bulbs went off at once.
I began to realise that our bodies are not our enemies, and that listening to ourselves is possibly the most powerful thing we can ever do.
